Katie Chappuis

I am about to head to Portland tomorrow so I wanted to get a bunch of posts up before I leave. I may not post for a few days, but who knows I may have more time on my hands than I am expecting. Though I will be posting stuff about Portland as I am going to play tourist for a little bit. I am looking forward to it!

I recently received a print from my friend Katie Chappuis, a multi- talented artist and designer. Katie has been working with textile design since her studies at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen last summer. The image shown above is a great example of Katie's work. Expect to see more of Katie's work from this blog in the future!

Dryerhair

"Dryerhair is a blow-dryer that features an elongated backend….kinda like an extra housing space to coil in the wire. Although the form is pretty rigid, it’s a good design that makes it compact when storing in a cupboard or a drawer. People may question the heat of the blower affecting the tailending wire, but I doubt that’s much of a concern." (via yankodesign.com)

Scratch Map

"If you want to show off where you’ve been, instead of a world map and pushpins why not buy My Scratch Map, a wall map created from the same scratchable stuff of lottery tickets. Simply scratch off the gold foil where you’ve been on the map to reveal a color underneath. What a great gift for the world traveler!" (via design-milk.com)

Rings with a Stainless Steel Screw!

"The M3 and M4 rings appeal to the inner child in all of us that has taken something apart and may or may not have put it back together again. For those whose interests never increased with carat size, the basic screw is elevated to the status of diamond. The rings feature a small cut-out that exposes the screw thread. Cast, finished and tapped in Toronto out of sterling silver, the custom stainless steel screw is removable from the ring for emergency use." (via design-milk.com)

Petite Watermelon Recipe

"Petite Watermelons

2 limes
1 small box of red Jello
mini chocolate chips

Cut both limes in half lengthwise. Scoop out all the fruit with a spoon. Place the limes in a muffin tin to keep them from tipping over. Make the box of Jello according to the Jiggler directions. Carefully spoon Jello into the limes halves. Chill until almost firm. Using a skewer push the mini chocolate chips into the Jello for "watermelon seeds." Chill until until firm, then cut into slices." (via chocolateonmycranium.blogspot.com)

Rupee Redesign

"The Indian government sponsored a competition to design a currency symbol for the Indian Rupee, heralding its role as an important player in the world economy, backed by a 1.2 trillion dollar (or thereabouts) GDP. The new "brand" will differentiate India's currency from other countries who also use rupees. The winner, pictured above, was approved by the Cabinet last Friday, a combination of a roman 'R' and the Devanagri 'Ra' (below), by IIT graduate D Udaya Kumar." (via core77.com)

How to make ice cream without an ice cream maker!

"- Makes about 1 quart of ice cream -
Ingredients

8 large egg yolks
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt
1 (12-ounce) can evaporated milk
2 cups heavy cream
Procedure

1. In large bowl or stand mixer fitted with whisk attachment, whisk egg yolks, sugar, vanilla, and salt until pale yellow and mixture falls off of whisk in thick ribbons, about 5 minutes. Set aside. Stirring constantly, heat evaporated milk in medium saucepan on stovetop until it comes to a simmer. Slowly add hot milk to egg mixture, whisking constantly, until fully incorporated. Transfer mixture back to saucepan and heat, whisking constantly, to 180°F (it should become thick and custardy). Do not overheat, or eggs will scramble. Chill mixture completely.

2. Whip 1 cup heavy cream with whisk or in stand mixer until doubled in volume. Add whipped cream to egg mixture and fold with whisk just until no lumps remain. Pour mixture into ice cube trays and freeze for 4 hours, or until solid.

3. Combine frozen cubes of ice cream (use a spoon or a dull knife to remove them) and remaining heavy cream in food processor and process until smooth, about 30 seconds, scraping down sides and breaking up lumps as necessary during process. Transfer mixture to quart container, and freeze for at least 4 more hours before serving."
